Mnemosyne: Titan Goddess of Memory

The Story of Mnemosyne

Mnemosyne was one of the twelve Titans, a daughter of Uranus and Gaia. Her name means memory, and she was the goddess of memory and remembrance. Our word mnemonic, a trick for remembering things, comes from her name.

Mnemosyne is best known as the mother of the nine Muses. Hesiod tells how Zeus came to her in Pieria, near Mount Olympus, and lay with her for nine nights in a row. A year later she gave birth to nine daughters, who became the goddesses of song, poetry, history and the arts.

The link between memory and the Muses made perfect sense to the Greeks. Before writing was common, poets had to remember long epics by heart, and they believed memory was a gift from the gods. Singers like Homer called on the Muses, the daughters of Memory, to help them recall the deeds of heroes.

Mnemosyne also had a place in beliefs about the afterlife. Orphic texts, written on thin gold tablets buried with the dead, told souls in the Underworld to avoid the spring of Lethe, which wiped away memory. Instead they were to drink from the pool of Mnemosyne, to keep their memories and win a blessed afterlife.

At the oracle of Trophonius in Boeotia, visitors drank first from a spring of Lethe to forget their worries and then from a spring of Mnemosyne so they would remember what they saw. Mnemosyne was honored in some temples alongside the Muses. For the Greeks, she stood for the power that keeps stories, knowledge and the past alive.
