Peitho: Greek Goddess of Persuasion

The Story of Peitho

Peitho was the goddess of persuasion, seduction and charm. Her family is told in different ways. Hesiod counts a Peitho among the daughters of Oceanus and Tethys, while other writers made her a daughter or close companion of Aphrodite.

Peitho was rarely far from the goddess of love, helping her win hearts with sweet and convincing words. When the gods created Pandora, the first woman, Peitho and the Graces placed golden necklaces around her neck to make her irresistible. Poets also gave her a role in the story of Helen and Paris, since the persuasion that led Helen to leave Sparta was her work.

The Greeks honored Peitho in love and in public life alike. In Athens she was worshipped together with Aphrodite Pandemos, a cult said to date back to the time when Theseus united the villages of Attica into one city, and brides honored her at weddings. Because so much of Greek politics depended on speeches, she was also linked with the power of a good speaker to sway a crowd, and the Romans knew her as Suada.
