Polyhymnia: Greek Muse of Sacred Hymns

The Story of Polyhymnia

Polyhymnia was the Muse of sacred hymns and sacred poetry, one of the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Her name means many hymns. She inspired solemn songs of praise to the gods, and in later times she was also linked with the art of pantomime.

With her sisters, Polyhymnia took part in the contest against the daughters of King Pierus, who foolishly challenged the Muses to a singing match. The Muses won, and when the sisters insulted them, they were changed into magpies.

Polyhymnia was usually shown veiled and thoughtful, often with a finger raised to her lips, as if deep in prayer or meditation. She was honored with her sisters at Mount Helicon and Pieria. For the Greeks, she stood for the serious, devout side of poetry and song.
