Thallo: Greek Goddess of Spring Blossoms

The Story of Thallo

Thallo was the goddess of spring blossoms and one of the Horae, the goddesses of the seasons. She was a daughter of Zeus and Themis. Her name comes from a Greek word meaning to bloom or sprout.

Thallo brought the first buds, green shoots and flowers out of the earth as winter came to an end. She has no adventures of her own, because her work was the steady return of new growth each year. Artists showed the Horae as graceful young women carrying flowers and fruit, each one bringing the gifts of her own season.

The Athenians worshipped two Horae, Thallo and Carpo, the goddesses of blossom and harvest. Young Athenian men taking their oath of service as citizens called on Thallo among the divine witnesses. For a farming people, her return each spring was the first promise of a good year.
