The Story of Zagreus
Zagreus was a mysterious god of rebirth from the Orphic tradition. In Orphic myth he was the son of Zeus and Persephone, born after Zeus came to Persephone in the form of a serpent. His name appears in only a few early sources, and his full story comes from later Orphic writings.
Zeus loved the child and intended him to rule the world after him. In some tellings he even set the infant on his own throne and let him play with the thunderbolt. This favor stirred the bitter jealousy of Hera, who could not bear to see another child of Zeus raised so high.
Hera stirred up the Titans against the boy. They whitened their faces with chalk to disguise themselves and lured the child away with toys, including a mirror, knucklebones and a spinning top. Then they seized him, tore him apart and devoured him.
Zeus struck the Titans down with his lightning in revenge. Athena saved the child's heart, and Zeus used it to give him new life. In some accounts Zeus gave the heart to Semele, and Zagreus was reborn as Dionysus, which is why the Orphics honored Dionysus as the god who died and came back.
Some late Orphic writers added that mankind sprang from the ashes of the burned Titans, so every person carried both the wicked nature of the Titans and a spark of the divine child they had eaten. Followers of the Orphic mysteries sought to purify themselves so that the divine part could win out. For them, Zagreus was the heart of a hope for rebirth and a better life after death.
