Zelus: Greek God of Zeal and Rivalry

The Story of Zelus

Zelus was the god of zeal, rivalry and emulation, a son of the Titan Pallas and the goddess Styx. His brother was Kratos and his sisters were Nike and Bia. His name comes from the Greek word zelos, the source of our words zeal and jealousy.

Like his siblings, Zelus was brought to Zeus by his mother at the start of the war against the Titans. Hesiod tells that Zeus honored them for their early loyalty and let them dwell with him always, so wherever Zeus went, Zelus was close by. No other adventures of his have come down to us.

The Greeks saw zelos as a double edged feeling. At its best it was the eager drive to match and surpass others, the spirit that pushed athletes, poets and craftsmen to excel. At its worst it turned into envy and bitter rivalry, which is why Zelus was imagined as a fitting companion for Nike, the goddess of victory.
