European Migrant Crisis in Greece

In 2015 and 2016, Greece became the main entry point to Europe for hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants, most of them fleeing the wars in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Most crossed the narrow stretch of sea from the Turkish coast to the nearby Greek islands, especially Lesbos, as well as Chios, Samos, Kos and Leros, often in overcrowded rubber boats. In 2015 alone, around 850,000 people arrived in Greece by sea. Many drowned during the crossing, including children, and the image of the body of Alan Kurdi, a Syrian toddler found on a Turkish beach, shocked the world. Locals and volunteers helped rescue and care for the arrivals, and the people of Lesbos were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Most migrants continued north through the Balkans toward Germany and other countries until the route was closed in early 2016. In March 2016, the European Union and Turkey signed an agreement to reduce crossings. Thousands remained trapped in overcrowded camps on the islands, such as Moria on Lesbos, which was destroyed by fire in 2020.
