Souliote Wars: What Happened

From 1789 to 1803, the people of Souli, a group of mountain villages in Epirus, fought a long series of wars against Ali Pasha of Ioannina, the powerful Ottoman governor who ruled much of western Greece and Albania. The Souliotes were Orthodox Christian warriors who had lived for generations in near independence in their rugged mountains, paying little or no tribute and raiding the surrounding lowlands. Ali Pasha, determined to control the whole region, launched repeated campaigns against them. For years, the Souliotes defeated his much larger armies, using their knowledge of the terrain and fierce fighting skills. Their leaders, including members of the Tzavelas and Botsaris families, became legendary, and Souliote women also took part in the fighting. Ali Pasha eventually changed tactics, blockading Souli, cutting off its supplies and using bribery to divide its leaders. In December 1803, the starving Souliotes surrendered under an agreement allowing them to leave. Many were attacked as they left, leading to tragedies such as the Dance of Zalongo. Surviving Souliotes later fought in the Greek War of Independence.
