1st and 2nd Finding of the Head of St. John the Baptist Feast Day

The 1st and 2nd Finding of the Head of St. John the Baptist is commemorated in the Orthodox Christian Church as the remembrance of the discovery and rediscovery of the holy relic of St. John the Baptist, the prophet who baptized Jesus Christ. This feast is celebrated each year on February 24.

Who Was St. John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist is one of the most important figures in Christianity and is honored as the Forerunner of Christ.

He preached repentance and prepared the people for the coming of Jesus Christ. According to the Gospel accounts, John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River, marking the beginning of Christ’s public ministry.

The Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist was later imprisoned by King Herod Antipas after publicly condemning the king’s unlawful marriage.

As a result of this conflict, John was eventually beheaded, and his martyrdom became one of the most well known events in early Christian history.

The Finding of the Head of St. John

After his martyrdom, the head of St. John the Baptist was hidden and later discovered by faithful Christians.

The Church commemorates both the first and second discoveries of this sacred relic, which became an important part of Christian devotion and tradition.

These events are remembered together in the Orthodox calendar as the 1st and 2nd Finding of the Head of St. John the Baptist.

When the Feast Is Celebrated
