St. Mark the Evangelist Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Mark the Evangelist is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as one of the four Evangelists and the author of the Gospel of Mark. His feast day is celebrated on April 25, and on this day people named Markos, Mark, Marcus, Marcos, Marka, and Markella, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Mark

St. Mark, also known as John Mark, was an early Christian disciple and one of the important figures in the spread of Christianity during the first century.

He was closely connected to several of the early apostles, including St. Peter and St. Paul, and played an important role in the early Christian community.

Author of the Gospel of Mark

St. Mark is traditionally recognized as the author of the Gospel of Mark, one of the four canonical Gospels of the New Testament.

His Gospel presents a clear and direct account of the life, teachings, miracles, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is widely believed that much of his writing was influenced by the teachings and eyewitness accounts of St. Peter.

Missionary Work

St. Mark traveled widely as a missionary and helped spread Christianity throughout the Mediterranean world. According to Christian tradition, he later traveled to Alexandria in Egypt, where he founded one of the earliest Christian communities.

Because of this, he is also recognized as the founder of the Church of Alexandria.

Greek Name Day for Mark

Because St. Mark the Evangelist is commemorated on April 25, this date is also the Greek name day for:

Markos

Mark

Marcus

Marcos

Marka

Markella

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday. Friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.

When St. Mark Is Celebrated
