St. Theodore the Tyro Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Theodore the Tyro is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as a soldier and martyr remembered for his courage and steadfast devotion to the Christian faith. His feast day is celebrated on February 17, and on this day people named Theodoros, Theodore, Theo, Teddy, Theodora, Dora, and Dorothea, among other variations celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Theodore the Tyro

St. Theodore the Tyro lived during the late 3rd and early 4th centuries and served as a young soldier in the Roman army. The title “Tyro” means “recruit,” referring to his role as a newly enlisted soldier.

Despite serving in the Roman military, Theodore remained committed to his Christian faith during a time when Christians were often persecuted by Roman authorities.

Faith in the Face of Persecution

According to Christian tradition, St. Theodore refused to participate in pagan religious practices required by the Roman army. Because of his refusal to worship pagan gods, he was arrested and brought before authorities.

Even under pressure, he refused to abandon his Christian beliefs.

Martyrdom of St. Theodore the Tyro

St. Theodore ultimately suffered martyrdom for his faith. His courage and dedication to Christianity made him one of the most widely honored military saints in the Orthodox Church.

His memory is also associated with the tradition of koliva in the Orthodox Church, which is often prepared in his honor.

Greek Name Day for Theodore

Because St. Theodore the Tyro is commemorated on February 17, this date is also the Greek name day for:

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday, and friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.
