St. Gordios Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Gordios is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as a martyr who remained faithful to his beliefs during a time of persecution. His feast day is celebrated on January 3, and on this day people named Gordios and Gordia celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Gordios

St. Gordios lived during the 4th century and served as a Roman officer in Cappadocia. During this period, Christians often faced persecution for refusing to abandon their faith and participate in pagan religious practices.

Rather than deny his beliefs, Gordios chose to leave military life and live in the wilderness, dedicating himself to prayer and reflection.

The Martyrdom of St. Gordios

According to tradition, St. Gordios eventually returned to the city during a public festival where pagan sacrifices were being offered. In front of the gathered crowd, he openly declared his Christian faith and refused to worship the Roman gods.

Because of this act, he was arrested and ordered to renounce Christianity. When he refused, he was sentenced to death and became honored as a martyr of the Christian faith.

Greek Name Day for Gordios

Because St. Gordios is commemorated on January 3, this date is also the Greek name day for:

GordiosGordia

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday, and friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.

When Is St. Gordios Celebrated

The feast day of St. Gordios is observed each year on January 3 in the Greek Orthodox Church. Churches hold services honoring his life and martyrdom, and those who share the name celebrate their name day with family and friends.
