St. Nicephoros of Antioch is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as a martyr remembered for his humility, forgiveness, and dedication to the Christian faith. His feast day is celebrated on February 9, and on this day people named Nicephoros, Nikiforos, Nikiforos, Nike, and Niki, among other variations celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Nicephoros of Antioch

St. Nicephoros lived during the early centuries of Christianity in the city of Antioch, one of the most important centers of the early Christian world. He was known as a devout believer who lived a life dedicated to faith and Christian values.

His life is remembered for his humility and his desire to reconcile conflicts among fellow Christians.

A Story of Forgiveness

According to Church tradition, St. Nicephoros had a close friendship with a priest named Sapricius. At some point the two had a disagreement that caused a separation between them.

Nicephoros repeatedly attempted to reconcile and asked for forgiveness, demonstrating humility and compassion even when reconciliation was difficult.

Martyrdom of St. Nicephoros

During the persecution of Christians under the Roman authorities, Sapricius was arrested for his faith. According to tradition, Sapricius eventually renounced Christianity under pressure, while Nicephoros openly confessed his belief in Christ.

Nicephoros was then executed for his faith, becoming honored as a martyr in the Orthodox Church.
