St. Simon the Zealot, Apostle Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Simon the Zealot, Apostle is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ who helped spread the Christian faith after the Resurrection. His feast day is celebrated on May 10, and on this day people named Simon, Simeon, Simos, Simona, Simone, and Simonetta, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Simon the Zealot

St. Simon the Zealot was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus Christ. The title “Zealot” is believed to refer either to his strong devotion to God or possibly to his association with a Jewish movement known for its religious zeal.

Very little is recorded about his life in the New Testament, but he is remembered as one of the apostles who followed Christ closely during His ministry.

Apostle and Missionary

After the Resurrection of Christ, St. Simon helped spread the Christian faith throughout various regions. According to Church tradition, he traveled widely as a missionary preaching the Gospel and helping establish early Christian communities.

Like many of the apostles, he faced persecution because of his commitment to Christianity.

Martyrdom

Tradition holds that St. Simon eventually suffered martyrdom for refusing to abandon the Christian faith. His dedication to spreading the message of Christ made him one of the respected figures among the apostles of the early Church.

Greek Name Day for Simon

Because St. Simon the Zealot, Apostle is commemorated on May 10, this date is also the Greek name day for:

Simon

Simeon

Simos

Simona

Simone

Simonetta

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday. Friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.
