St. Theodoulos the Reader Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Theodoulos the Reader is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as a Christian martyr who served the Church faithfully and remained devoted to Christ during a time of persecution. His feast day is celebrated on April 8, and on this day people named Theodoulos, Theodoulis, Theodoula, and Theodouli celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Theodoulos

St. Theodoulos lived during the early centuries of Christianity and served in the Church of Thessaloniki as a reader, a role responsible for reading the Scriptures during church services.

He worked closely with St. Agathopodos the Deacon, and the two were known for their strong faith and dedication to the Christian community.

Persecution and Martyrdom

During a time of persecution against Christians in the Roman Empire, St. Theodoulos and St. Agathopodos were arrested for openly practicing Christianity.

Despite being pressured to renounce their faith, both men refused. According to Christian tradition, they were eventually martyred by drowning, becoming honored among the early Christian martyrs of the Church.

Greek Name Day for Theodoulos

Because St. Theodoulos the Reader is commemorated on April 8, this date is also the Greek name day for:

Theodoulos

Theodoulis

Theodoula

Theodouli

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday. Friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.

When St. Theodoulos Is Celebrated

The feast day of St. Theodoulos the Reader is observed each year on April 8 in the Greek Orthodox Church. He is remembered for his service to the Church and for the courage he showed in remaining faithful during the persecutions of early Christians.
