St. Efstratios Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Efstratios is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as a martyr remembered for his courage and devotion to the Christian faith during the Roman persecutions. His feast day is celebrated on January 9, and on this day people named Efstratios and Stratos celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Efstratios

St. Efstratios lived during the early 4th century and served as a respected official in the Roman administration. During this time, Christians were often persecuted for refusing to worship the traditional Roman gods.

Efstratios openly professed his Christian faith and supported fellow believers who were suffering persecution, which eventually brought him to the attention of Roman authorities.

Martyrdom of St. Efstratios

During the persecutions ordered by Emperor Diocletian, St. Efstratios was arrested because of his faith. According to Christian tradition, he was subjected to torture and pressure to renounce Christianity.

He refused to abandon his beliefs and remained steadfast in his faith. Because of this, he was ultimately executed and honored by the Church as a martyr.

Greek Name Day for Efstratios

Because St. Efstratios is commemorated on January 9, this date is also the Greek name day for:

EfstratiosStratos

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday, and friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.
