About King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens
King George stands on Syntagma Square in the centre of Athens, in a building that dates back to 1930. It is a Luxury Collection hotel run by Marriott, and its style leans classic: antiques, hardwood floors, silk drapes and oversized windows looking over the square and the city. The concierge is on hand around the clock, in-room dining runs 24 hours, and babysitting can be arranged.
Rooms and suites
All rooms have the Luxury Collection bed with Frette linen, nightly turndown and a marble bathroom with a rainfall shower, and many add a bathtub. Some rooms have a patio or balcony. The brand site does not publish room sizes, so ask the hotel if floor space matters to you.
The rooms suit couples and business travellers who want to be on Syntagma Square. Guests who want more space can book the Deluxe Suite or the Grand Acropolis Suite, and the suites look over the city centre or the atrium. The top choice is the Penthouse Suite on the ninth floor: two bedrooms, a terrace with sitting and dining areas, and a private outdoor pool facing the Acropolis. It works well for a family or two couples travelling together. For children, the hotel offers a kids' menu, high chairs and bed railings on request.
Rooftop dining and breakfast
Tudor Hall, on the seventh floor, is the hotel's restaurant, with an outdoor area looking over the Acropolis and Syntagma Square. Breakfast is served there for hotel guests from 6:30am to 11am. Dinner runs daily from 6pm to 11pm (the kitchen closes at 10:30pm), with contemporary Greek cuisine and Greek and international wines. The Tudor Hall Bar is open from 5pm to 1am. After 5pm the dress code is smart casual: shorts are allowed only with closed shoes, and beachwear, sportswear and flip-flops are not allowed.
Downstairs, George, The Lobby Bar is open daily from 8am to midnight. It serves espresso and brunch in the morning and a relaxed lunch at midday. In the evening it becomes a cocktail bar, with signature drinks prepared at the table and small plates to go with them. The fitness centre is temporarily closed for renovation, so check before you travel if a gym matters to you.
