How Many Days Should I Spend in Athens?

Athens covers well over two days for the Acropolis and its closest neighborhoods, and three to four let the city's museums, markets, and day trips spread out at a proper pace.

Athens fills a first day easily around the Acropolis, best visited early to beat both the heat and the crowds, followed by the Acropolis Museum, built over an active excavation site, and an afternoon walk through Plaka, the city's oldest neighborhood, and Anafiotika, its Cycladic-style corner tucked beneath the rock itself. Monastiraki's flea market and Lycabettus Hill, timed for sunset, round out the day well.

A second day belongs to the Ancient Agora, once the civic heart of the city and home to the well preserved Temple of Hephaestus, along with the National Archaeological Museum, holding one of the world's most significant collections of Greek antiquities. Syntagma Square's changing of the guard, timed on the hour, fits naturally into the same day.

A third day suits the neighborhoods a shorter visit tends to skip, Kolonaki for its galleries and boutiques, and Koukaki for a quieter look at contemporary Athens, along with a market visit or a cooking class for anyone wanting a deeper look at the city's food.

Guided walking tours, food tours through the city's markets, and cooking classes are all common ways to fill a fourth day, and you can browse things to do and guided experiences in Athens to see what fits.

A fourth day or more works well for a day trip to Cape Sounion for the Temple of Poseidon, or further out to Delphi, where ancient Greeks once consulted the oracle.

Two days cover the Acropolis, its museum, and the closest neighborhoods comfortably, three adds the Agora and the archaeological museum, and four brings the quieter neighborhoods and a day trip into the mix. Even a single day, timed for an early Acropolis visit, leaves a real impression of the city's ancient core, but Athens holds enough depth between its ruins, museums, and neighborhoods to justify staying for the better part of a week.
