How Many Days Should I Spend in Kavala?
Kavala's old town fits easily into a day, but Philippi and Thassos nearby make three days or more a stronger fit for the region.
Kavala covers well in a single day. The Panagia peninsula holds a 15th century fortress with views over the port, the Kamares aqueduct frames photos across the city below, and the Imaret, built in 1817 by Muhammad Ali Pasha, gives one of the finer examples of Ottoman architecture left in Greece. An evening on the harbor, where seafood restaurants work straight off the day's catch, rounds out the day well.
A second day belongs to Philippi, about 20 minutes away, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the apostle Paul preached his first sermon in Europe. The theater, basilicas, and old city walls take a couple of hours to walk properly, and the Tobacco Museum back in Kavala pairs naturally with the rest of the afternoon for anyone interested in the city's economic history.
A third day, or the start of a longer stay, crosses by ferry from nearby Keramoti to Thassos, a trip of well under an hour. The island's marble beach, ancient theater, and mountain villages give enough to fill several days on their own, so travelers with more time often split a week between Kavala and the island rather than treating it as a single day trip.
One day covers Kavala's old town and harbor comfortably, two adds Philippi and a deeper look at the city's history, and three or more opens the door to Thassos as a real extension of the trip rather than a rushed crossing. Even a single day gives real insight into the city's layered Ottoman and Byzantine history, but the island and ancient site nearby make a strong case for staying longer.
