How Many Days Should I Spend on Aegina?

Aegina fills a first day easily around Aegina Town, where narrow streets full of shops give way to a harbor lined with restaurants serving the island's famous pistachios in everything from savory dishes to sweets. The Temple of Aphaia, on a pine-covered hill near Agia Marina, ranks among the best preserved Doric temples in Greece, and the walk around it gives real insight into a site that once formed a symbolic triangle with the Acropolis and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio.

A second day belongs to the Monastery of Saint Nektarios, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Greece, dedicated to the island's patron saint, with a museum and quiet grounds worth setting aside real time for. Perdika, a fishing village on the southern tip, makes a strong stop for an evening meal by the water.

A third day suits a boat trip to Moni, an uninhabited islet where deer and peacocks roam freely alongside clear water for swimming, or renting a car to reach the Paleochora hillside, holding the remains of dozens of small chapels built when residents retreated inland from pirate raids.

Aegina connects to Athens by ferry from Piraeus, with fast catamarans running the crossing in 30 to 40 minutes and slower ferries taking closer to an hour and a half.
