How Many Days Should I Spend on Agathonisi?

Agathonisi covers well over two days for the island's small scale, and a third day gives its slower pace enough room to actually settle in.

Agathonisi fills a first day easily around Megalo Chorio, the main village, where an evening stroll takes in the whole settlement within an hour or two. Spilia Beach, a short walk from the port, gives clear water and sand for an easy first swim, and one of the island's three tavernas rounds out the evening with fresh seafood.

A second day belongs to Mikro Chorio, the smaller and quieter of the island's two villages, along with Kastraki, a viewpoint over both the island and the surrounding sea. The Hellenistic settlement at Kastraki and the domed Tholoi structures nearby give real depth to a walk that otherwise moves at a slow pace by design.

A third day suits Agathonisi's role as a Natura 2000 site, since the island draws serious birdwatchers for its position along a migratory route, and the rocky, barren terrain outside the villages gives anyone willing to walk it real views back over the water. A scooter or the island's few taxis make it easy to cover more ground for anyone who'd rather not walk everywhere.

Agathonisi has no airport, and most travelers connect through Patmos or Samos by ferry, a crossing that can run anywhere from six to eleven hours depending on the route, so building in travel time on either end matters more here than on better connected islands.
