Agios Efstratios fills a first day easily around the village, the island's only settlement, rebuilt after a devastating 1968 earthquake in the valley between two dried riverbeds. The Museum of Democracy, the country's first public museum dedicated to the political prisoners exiled here through much of the 20th century, gives real weight to a walk through the harbor's simple houses and few tavernas.

A second day belongs to the island's beaches, most reachable within about an hour's walk since there are no roads or buses to rely on. Alonitsi, on the northeast side, offers clear water and soft sand, and the long stretch of sand at Velia gives another option for anyone wanting to spread the day between two coves rather than one.

A third day suits the island's hiking trails, since the volcanic terrain and rare stand of oak forest give the highest point wide views over the Aegean, and the coastal caves nearby shelter the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. With almost no light pollution, an evening spent stargazing on the beach rounds out a slower final day.

Agios Efstratios has no airport, and most travelers connect through Lemnos by a ferry of about 90 minutes, with less frequent direct sailings from Lavrio or Kavala on the mainland.
