How Many Days Should I Spend on Astypalaia?
Astypalaia covers well over three days for the essentials, and four to five let its beaches, hiking trails, and Chora's alleys come together without feeling rushed.
Astypalaia fills a first day easily around Chora, the capital, where whitewashed lanes climb toward the windmills and the Venetian Castle of Querini at the top. Livadi, a short drive away, gives an easy first swim, and dinner in Chora beneath the castle walls sets a good pace for the days that follow.
A second day belongs to Steno Beach, sitting at the narrowest point of the island's butterfly-shaped coastline, with a beach canteen serving traditional Greek food right on the sand. Pera Gialos and Maltezana, both within easy reach of Chora, round out a day of moving between the island's more accessible beaches.
A third day suits a boat trip to Kounoupi, an uninhabited islet off the port of Pera Gialos known for its clear water, along with time spent simply sitting in one of Chora's cafes, since the town rewards lingering as much as sightseeing.
A fourth or fifth day works well for hiking to the chapel of Prophet Elias, the island's highest point, or for renting a car to reach Vathy and the more remote coves that a shorter visit rarely covers. Astypalaia also connects by ferry to Amorgos, reflecting the island's position between the Dodecanese and the Cyclades, making it a natural stop for anyone extending the trip further.
Two days cover Chora and a first beach comfortably, three adds Steno and a boat trip, and four or five bring hiking and the island's more remote corners into a proper stay. Even a short two-day visit gives a real sense of Chora's alleys and castle, but Astypalaia's beaches, trails, and slower pace give genuine reason to stay well beyond a quick weekend.
