How Many Days Should I Spend on Chios?
Chios covers well over three days for the mastic villages and Chios Town, and five to seven let the mountain villages and quieter beaches spread out at a proper pace.
Chios fills a first day easily in Chios Town, where a fortified castle built in 1328 by the Genoese family of Zaccaria overlooks the old center, and the windmills along the northeast coast make a good stop on the way to a swim at Giosonas beach. Daskalopetra, a rock just north of town where legend holds Homer once sat to write, adds a stop rooted in the island's older mythology.
A second day belongs to the mastic villages in the south, known collectively as the mastichochoria, built by Genoese settlers with fortified walls and narrow streets. Mesta keeps the most complete example of that architecture, and Pyrgi covers its house facades in black and white geometric patterns unique to the village.
A third day suits Volissos, a mountain village about 40 kilometers north of town, where an 11th century castle gives views over the surrounding Amani region, and the stone-built bakery in the village center is worth timing a visit before 10am for fresh bread and local honey.
A fourth day works well for the citrus orchards and mansions of Kampos, a fertile plain outside Chios Town, along with quieter beaches like Lithi, known for its golden sand, or a boat trip to the Oinousses islands, home to some of Greece's most prominent shipping families.
A fifth day or more works well for the villages of Nenita and Kallimasia, along with hikes through the Amani region's untouched terrain that a shorter visit rarely reaches.
Three days cover Chios Town and the mastic villages comfortably, four adds Volissos and Kampos, and five to seven bring the quieter villages, hikes, and a possible Oinousses day trip into a fuller stay. Even a short three-day visit gives a real sense of the island's layered history, but Chios's mountain villages and coastline give genuine reason to plan for considerably more time than that.
