How Many Days Should I Spend on Kastellorizo?

Kastellorizo covers well over two days for the harbor and its main sights, and three to four let the monastery hike and long, unhurried dinners actually take hold.

Kastellorizo fills a first day easily around the harbor, a U-shaped bay framed by 19th century mansions painted in pinks and ochres, pressed shoulder to shoulder against the water. The village itself is small enough to walk end to end in about half an hour, and a swim near the main beach, with visibility reaching down ten meters or more, gives an easy first afternoon in the water.

A second day belongs to the Blue Cave, one of the largest sea grottos in Greece and reachable only by boat, best visited in the early morning when sunlight reflecting off the seabed turns the water and cave walls a deep electric blue. Boat trips out of the harbor often pair the cave with a stop at the Lycian rock-cut tomb carved into the cliffs above town.

A third day suits the hike to the Monastery of St. George of the Mountain, built on the ruins of an ancient acropolis, along with time spent simply sitting at a harbor taverna, since Kastellorizo rewards a slower pace more than a checklist of sights.

A fourth day works well for the remaining coves along the coast road, most without facilities but with clear water and few other visitors, or for an evening spent watching the lights of the Turkish coast come on across the water as the sun sets. Kastellorizo connects to Rhodes by a short flight or a longer ferry, and to the Turkish town of Kaş by a twenty minute crossing.

A single day gives a real taste of the harbor and a swim, two days add the Blue Cave and the rock tombs properly, and three or four bring the monastery hike and a genuine slowdown into the trip. Even a short overnight leaves a lasting impression of the harbor's colors, but Kastellorizo's caves, tombs, and quiet coves give real reason to stay longer than a rushed crossing allows.
