How Many Days Should I Spend on Kos?
Kos covers well over three to four days, and five lets the island's ruins, beaches, and mountain villages spread out at a proper pace.
Kos fills a first day easily in Kos Town, where the Castle of the Knights, built in the 14th century near the harbor, sits within walking distance of the Ancient Agora and the plane tree said to mark where Hippocrates once taught medicine. The Asklepieion, a few kilometers outside town, adds a second stop for anyone interested in the island's role in the history of medicine.
A second day belongs to cycling, since Kos runs over 200 kilometers of dedicated paths, more than any other Greek island, linking beaches, villages, and archaeological sites along mostly flat terrain. The coastal route between Kos Town and Tigaki covers a comfortable stretch with several beach stops along the way.
A third day suits the mountain village of Zia, best visited early morning or evening to avoid the midday crowds, with a hike up Mount Dikeos starting nearby for views stretching toward Kalymnos and the wider Dodecanese. Old Pyli, a medieval village abandoned in the 1800s, gives a quieter historical stop on the way back down.
A fourth or fifth day works well for Paradise Beach or Mastihari, both known for their sand and water, along with a wine tasting at one of the vineyards on Mount Dikeos's lower slopes. Kos also connects by ferry to Nisyros, close enough for a day trip to the volcano for anyone with additional time.
Two days cover Kos Town and a first cycling route comfortably, three adds Zia and the mountain villages, and four or five bring the beaches, wine tasting, and a possible Nisyros day trip into a fuller stay. Even a short two-day visit gives a real sense of the island's history and cycling paths, but Kos's beaches, villages, and archaeological sites give genuine reason to plan for considerably more time than that.
