How Many Days Should I Spend on Lemnos?
Lemnos covers well over four days given its size, and five to seven let the island's beaches, sand dunes, and archaeological sites spread out across a genuinely large island.
Lemnos fills a first day or two easily in Myrina, the capital, where a Byzantine castle overlooking the harbor is home to wild deer roaming freely among the ruins. The Archaeological Museum and the stone-paved streets near the waterfront give a real sense of the city's Byzantine and Ottoman layers, and the Saturday market is worth timing a visit around for local honey and cheese.
A third day belongs to the Ammothines sand dunes in the north, the only desert landscape of its kind in Europe, best seen in late afternoon when the sand turns a deep gold, along with Poliochni, considered the oldest organized city in Europe and predating Troy.
A fourth day suits the island's beaches, since Lemnos is large enough at nearly 500 square kilometers that a car makes a real difference in covering ground. Thanos, with its cafes and tavernas, and quieter, more remote coves further from Myrina both fit into a single day of driving between the coast's different characters.
A fifth day works well for the Sanctuary of Kavirio, dating to the 7th century BC and tied to secretive ancient mystery rites, along with a wine tasting near Kontias, where a Muscat variety has been cultivated on the island for roughly 2,500 years.
Lemnos connects by ferry to Kavala and to Samothrace, making it a workable stop within a longer North Aegean route for anyone with additional days.
Four days cover Myrina, the sand dunes, and Poliochni comfortably, five brings a full beach day and the sanctuary into the trip, and six or seven let the wine region and quieter corners of the island round things out fully. Even a short four-day visit gives a real sense of Lemnos's range, but the island's size gives genuine reason to plan for a full week.
