How Many Days Should I Spend on Lesvos?

Lesvos covers well over four days given its size as Greece's third largest island, and six to eight let Mytilene, Molyvos, and the Petrified Forest spread out at a proper pace.

Lesvos fills a first day or two easily in Mytilene, the capital, where a strong medieval castle overlooks the harbor and the Archaeological and Byzantine museums trace the island's layered history. The Theophilos Museum and the Stratis Eleftheriadis-Tériade Museum-Library, both in the Vareias district near the airport, give real depth to a stop focused on the island's art history.

A third day belongs to Molyvos on the north coast, a medieval town protected since 1965, with a 13th century Genoese castle overlooking stone houses and wooden balconies largely unchanged for generations. The drive there passes several coastal villages worth a stop along the way.

A fourth day suits the Petrified Forest near Sigri, a UNESCO Global Geopark where fossilized trees roughly 20 million years old were preserved by volcanic ash, paired with the Natural History Museum that explains the geology in more detail.

A fifth day works well for the wetlands around Kalloni, one of Europe's top birdwatching destinations, along with a visit to the mountain village of Agiassos for traditional crafts, or Plomari, built around the island's ouzo production and home to a museum dedicated to the spirit.

A sixth day or more suits the thermal springs at Eftalou, Polichnitos, or Gera, each offering natural hot baths with roots going back to Roman use, along with time spent simply exploring smaller villages by car. Lesvos also connects by ferry to Chios for anyone extending the trip further.

Four days cover Mytilene and Molyvos comfortably, six brings the Petrified Forest and Kalloni's wetlands into the trip properly, and eight lets the thermal springs and quieter villages round things out fully. Even a short four-day visit gives a real sense of the island's range, but Lesvos's size gives genuine reason to plan for considerably more time than that.
