How Many Days Should I Spend on Oinousses?
Oinousses covers well over a day trip from Chios, but two to three days let the island's maritime history, quiet coves, and private islets settle in properly.
Oinousses fills a first day easily around the town, where neoclassical mansions built by the island's founding shipping families line the harbor. The Maritime Museum, housed in the historic Laimos family mansion, holds an incredible collection of ship models built by French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars using bone and hair, and a long lunch at one of the harbor tavernas rounds out an easy first day well.
A second day belongs to the Monastery of the Annunciation, built in the 1960s in Byzantine style with icons by the noted painter Fotis Kontoglou, reached by a hike that gives sweeping views over the sea along the way. Bilali and Zepaga, both quiet coves near town, offer an easy swim before or after the walk.
A third day suits renting a small motorboat, the best way to reach the nine smaller islets surrounding the main island. Paspargos, a private cove reachable only by water, gives some of the clearest swimming in the North Aegean, and a plate of bourleros, a traditional fish soup, at the harbor makes a fitting way to end the visit.
Oinousses connects to Chios by a short ferry crossing of about 30 to 40 minutes, with less frequent direct sailings from Piraeus and Kavala running considerably longer.
A single day covers the town and the Maritime Museum for anyone visiting from Chios, two days add the monastery hike and a proper swim, and three brings the surrounding islets into the trip by boat. Even a short day trip gives a real sense of the island's maritime heritage, but Oinousses's private coves and quiet islets give clear reason to stay past the last afternoon crossing.
