How Many Days Should I Spend on Spetses?

Spetses covers well over two days for Dapia and the closest beaches, and three to four let the Old Harbor, the museums, and quieter coves come together at a proper pace.

Spetses fills a first day easily in Dapia, the main harbor paved with black and white pebble mosaics, where a horse-drawn carriage ride to the Old Harbor gives an easy way to see the wooden boats still built there by hand. The Bouboulina Museum, in a 300-year-old mansion, traces the story of Laskarina Bouboulina, the only woman in world history to hold the rank of naval admiral.

A second day belongs to Agia Marina, a sandy beach close to town good for swimming, along with the Museum of Hatzigiannis Mexis, housed in another 18th century mansion and holding artifacts spanning more than four thousand years, including remains from the Mycenaean shipwreck of Iria.

A third day suits Zogeria Bay, reachable only by boat or a hike through pine forest, and Bekiri's Cave, where local women and children once sheltered from Ottoman raids and where snorkelers now swim among the rock formations.

A fourth day works well for renting a bike to cover more of the island's roughly 29 kilometer coastal road, or for horse trekking through the countryside for views over the sea from above. Every September, the island reenacts an 1822 naval battle with a full scale replica ship set alight in the harbor, worth timing a visit around if the dates align.

Spetses connects to Piraeus by high speed ferry in around two to two and a half hours, and its position in the Saronic Gulf puts Hydra within easy reach for anyone extending the trip.

Two days cover Dapia and a first beach comfortably, three adds Zogeria Bay and the museum, and four brings cycling or horse trekking into a fuller stay. Even a short two-day visit gives a real sense of the island's car-free calm, but Spetses's history and quieter coves give clear reason to stay for the full four days rather than rushing through in one.
