Is Agathonisi Worth Visiting?
Agathonisi sits at the northern edge of the Dodecanese, close enough to Turkey that its remoteness feels deliberate rather than accidental, and the island has built its identity entirely around that isolation.
Agathonisi covers just 14 square kilometers and holds fewer than 200 year-round residents split between two villages, Megalo Chorio and Mikro Chorio, connected to the port of Agios Georgios by roads under a kilometer long. The island has been declared a Natura 2000 site for its role sheltering rare bird species, and its rocky, barren terrain, dotted with tamarisk trees and prickly pear, gives it a landscape unlike the greener islands nearby.
The Hellenistic settlement at Kastraki, on the island's north side, holds bronze and silver coins, clay honeycombs, and a network of ancient cisterns behind fortified walls, with excavations still ongoing. Nearby, the Tholoi, domed stone structures dating to the 11th century, once served as food warehouses and, according to local legend, connect to a cave system running beneath the island. The church of Agios Georgios, with its bell tower above the harbor, gives the port views over the entire bay.
Poros, on the island's east side, pairs shallow turquoise water with tamarisk shade and space for camping, while Vathi Pigadi suits diving and snorkeling and Tsangaris offers a wilder, pebble-covered stretch. Local food carries the same Dodecanese roots found across the region: kakavia, a fisherman's soup, stuffed goat, and a fruit cake made with schino, a native shrub, appear on menus at the handful of family-run tavernas around the harbor.
Agathonisi has no airport, so travelers connect through Patmos by a roughly one hour ferry or through Samos by a longer crossing, with direct ferries from Piraeus also running a few times a week in summer. It suits travelers seeking real isolation, birdwatching, and unspoiled beaches over convenience or nightlife, and a stay of several days gives the island's slower pace room to settle in.
