Is Delphi Worth Visiting?
Delphi sits on the slopes of Mount Parnassus at a spot ancient Greeks believed marked the exact center of the world, and standing among the ruins with the mountains rising behind them, the claim still makes a kind of sense.
Delphi overlooks the Gulf of Corinth, about two and a half to three hours by car from Athens. The Sanctuary of Apollo once housed the Oracle of Delphi, a priestess whose cryptic prophecies drew pilgrims from across the ancient Mediterranean, and the ruins that remain, including the Temple of Apollo and a stadium still tracing its original 177 meter running track, sit on a hillside steep enough that the view from the top matches the history built into it.
The Archaeological Museum next to the site holds what the ruins can't show on their own, including the bronze Charioteer statue and carved friezes pulled from the temples. Visiting the museum before the site itself gives the ruins more context, and most people need two to three hours to cover both properly.
There's no train to Delphi, so travelers arrive either by rental car or by bus from Athens, with four departures a day and a journey of roughly three hours each way. A day trip works, but staying overnight in the modern village lets you reach the site early, before the heat and tour buses arrive. Arachova, a stone built mountain village a short drive away, makes a good add on for a night if you want a slower pace after the site.
Delphi suits nearly anyone who visits, not just history or mythology enthusiasts, and it's worth building a full day around rather than rushing through on a tight schedule.
