Is Hydra Expensive?

Hydra carries a real reputation as the priciest of the Saronic islands, and that reputation holds up, largely because everything on the island, food, supplies, even luggage, arrives by boat given the total ban on cars.

Hydra charges a premium across nearly every category compared to neighboring Poros or Spetses, and that gap widens further during the peak weeks of June through August, when room rates and ferry demand both climb noticeably. Tavernas near the port tend to price fairly for fresh seafood, especially family-run spots away from the busiest tourist stretch, while restaurants closer to the water's edge charge considerably more for the same style of meal.

Water taxis run as the island's real cost to watch, since there's no other motorized transport option, and sharing a ride with other travelers heading the same direction helps bring that expense down. Donkey rides, the traditional way to move luggage or people uphill, add their own cost too, though walking covers most of the island's compact center without needing either.

Plenty of what makes Hydra worth visiting costs nothing at all, since hiking to Vlychos village, exploring the old windmills, or spending an afternoon at Mandraki Beach requires no entrance fee or transport expense beyond the walk itself.

Bringing cash matters here, since smaller tavernas and shops often prefer it over cards, and buying bottled water or wine from the mainland-priced supermarket rather than a harbor kiosk saves a real amount over a longer stay.

Hydra suits travelers willing to pay a genuine premium for its car-free streets and naval history, and visiting during April, May, September, or October brings both prices and crowds down considerably while keeping the island's character fully intact.
