Is Kalamata Worth Visiting?

Kalamata gives its name to a namesake olive, backs onto the Taygetos Mountains, and sits close enough to some of the Peloponnese's best ruins to anchor a stay on its own.

Kalamata is the second largest city in the Peloponnese, built along a long stretch of sandy beach at the foot of the Taygetos Mountains. A 13th century castle built by Frankish occupiers sits on a hill above the old town, giving clear views over the bay, and the Church of Ypapanti holds an icon dating to the 7th century that draws pilgrims from across Greece every February. The old town itself mixes historic buildings with cafes and shops in a way that feels lived in rather than staged.

The city gives its name to the Kalamata olive, a protected variety that only grows in this region, and olive oil tastings and grove tours are one of the more distinctive food experiences in the Peloponnese. Kalamata also runs a busy festival calendar, including an international dance festival and a summer music festival, that keeps the city active well beyond beach season.

Ancient Messene, about 30 kilometers away, is one of the best preserved ancient cities in Greece and far less crowded than sites like Olympia. The Mani peninsula's coastal villages, the Venetian castles at Methoni and Koroni, and the waterfalls of the Polylimnio gorge all make for easy day trips by car.
