Is Kavala Expensive?

Kavala tends to sit comfortably on the affordable side of the scale, running noticeably below Athens while still offering the kind of seaside setting and historic character that would usually carry a higher price tag.

Kavala costs meaningfully less than Athens across dining, housing, and everyday services, and that gap holds even with the city's real tourist appeal, since Kavala functions primarily as a working port and regional commercial center rather than a resort economy built purely around visitors. Fishing, shipping, and trade have shaped the local economy for generations, which keeps prices oriented toward residents rather than climbing to match what a purely tourist-driven city might charge.

Accommodation in and around the old town, Panagia, tends to cost more than the newer parts of the city, since its restored mansions and harbor views carry a premium, but even that stays reasonable compared to similarly atmospheric old towns elsewhere in Greece. Staying a short distance from the immediate waterfront, or visiting outside the busiest summer weeks, brings costs down noticeably without sacrificing much in the way of location.

Groceries and local markets keep food costs low throughout the city, and eating at the working tavernas along the harbor, rather than the more polished restaurants directly facing the water, tends to offer real value without much compromise on quality. Public transport stays inexpensive as well, and Kavala's compact center makes walking a practical option for most of what a visitor needs to see.

Kavala suits travelers who want real coastal character, layered Ottoman and Byzantine history, and easy access to Thassos, all without the costs that come with more heavily marketed Greek destinations. For a closer look at everyday expenses in the city, Kavala's cost of living page breaks down rent, groceries, and utilities in more detail.
