Is Kimolos Good for Families?

Kimolos keeps its best beaches shallow and calm by design, and that alone makes it an easy yes for families with younger kids.

Kimolos's Bonatsa, close to the port and the village of Chorio, ranks as the island's most reliable family beach, its name translating roughly to "calm sea," and it holds up even when the Meltemi winds pick up elsewhere. Sandy, shallow, and shaded by tamarisk trees, it has umbrellas, sunbeds, and a small cafe close enough that a full day here rarely requires much planning.

Aliki, right next to Bonatsa near the port, mixes sand and pebbles in shallow water and gives snorkeling kids a genuine reason to get excited, since the remains of an 8th century BC settlement sit visible just meters offshore. Klima, a short distance from Chorio, gives another easy sandy option for families who'd rather stay close to the village.

Prassa, on the north side of the island, holds the only real beach bar on Kimolos, and it runs an outdoor cinema through summer evenings, giving families a rare planned activity on an island that otherwise runs on a genuinely unhurried pace. A local volunteer group, the Kimolistes, organizes similar community events throughout the season, including a traveling outdoor cinema that moves between beaches.

For families with older kids, boat tours around the island's coastline reach sea caves, rock arches, and coves that stay out of reach by road, and some trips combine Kimolos with a stop at the uninhabited islet of Polyaigos nearby.

Kimolos suits families who want shallow, calm swimming without a resort scene built around it, real village life within walking distance of the beach, and a pace slow enough that kids end up setting the schedule rather than a checklist of attractions. Milos, a short ferry away, gives an easy add-on for families wanting more variety.
