Is Kos Worth Visiting?

Kos was the birthplace of Hippocrates, the physician who turned medicine from ritual into observation, and the island still builds much of its identity around the healing sanctuary where he once taught.

Kos carries a 5,000-year history shaped by ancient Greeks, Romans, Venetians, medieval Knights, and Ottomans, and the Asklepieion, a few kilometers outside Kos Town, was one of the ancient world's leading medical centers, built across three terraced levels and still drawing visitors interested in its role in shaping Western medicine. In town, a 500-year-old plane tree, said to descend from the one Hippocrates taught beneath, stands beside the Castle of the Knights, a 14th century fortress connected to it by a bridge over what was once a moat.

Kos runs over 200 kilometers of dedicated cycling paths, more than any other Greek island, linking beaches, villages, and archaeological sites. The coastal route between Kos Town and Tigaki covers 12 flat kilometers with beach stops along the way, and the stretch between Marmari and Mastichari holds some of the island's best sand, running for miles largely undeveloped along the north coast.

Zia, a mountain village best visited early morning or evening to avoid the midday crowds, sits at the start of the hike up Mount Dikeos, the island's highest point, with a small chapel and views stretching toward Kalymnos and the wider Dodecanese from the summit. A handful of wineries on the lower slopes of the mountain produce Assyrtiko and other varieties from the island's volcanic soil, with tastings that pair easily with a day spent in the surrounding villages.

Kos has its own airport with direct flights from Athens and, in summer, several European cities, and ferries connect it to Rhodes, Kalymnos, Leros, and neighboring Nisyros, making it a workable base for exploring the wider Dodecanese as well. It suits families, cyclists, and history-focused travelers alike, with enough packed into its beaches and archaeological sites to fill a week on its own.
