Is Koufonisia Worth Visiting?
Koufonisia sits between Naxos and Amorgos in the Small Cyclades, and locals here run one of the largest fishing fleets per capita in Greece, a detail that says plenty about how much the sea still shapes daily life.
Koufonisia centers on Chora, the island's only village, built around a harbor where whitewashed lanes stay busy with cafes and a windmill at the western edge marks the start of the waterfront. The Church of Agios Georgios anchors the center, and the small Folk Museum next to it, opened in 2011, traces the island's fishing history. The island stays largely car-free, and most visitors get around on foot, by bike, or on the local boat that runs along the coast to the main beaches.
Pori, on the island's far side, ranks among the best beaches in the Cyclades, a curve of pale sand backed by low dunes. Finikas, Fanos, and Italida line the same stretch of coast closer to Chora, and Ammos sits within walking distance of the port itself. Most beaches here have no umbrellas or sunbeds, so bringing shade and water is standard practice.
A short boat ride from the port crosses to Kato Koufonisi, an uninhabited stretch of coastline with its own beaches and hiking paths kept quiet by the lack of any real infrastructure. Keros, another uninhabited island nearby, holds an important archaeological site from the Early Cycladic period, and while it has no beaches to swim from, boat trips there let visitors see the excavation from the water.
Koufonisia suits travelers who want real beach days, a small working village, and boat access to quieter coastline without needing a car, and it pairs naturally with a stop on Naxos or Amorgos, both under an hour away by ferry.
