Is Samothrace Worth Visiting?

Samothrace gave the world the Winged Victory, the headless marble goddess now standing at the top of the Louvre's grand staircase, and the sanctuary where she was unearthed still sits on the island exactly where ancient pilgrims once practiced secret initiation rites.

Samothrace rises out of the northern Aegean as a single granite mountain, Mount Saos, also called Fengari, the highest peak in the Aegean at 1,611 meters and, according to legend, the spot where Poseidon watched the Trojan War unfold. The Sanctuary of the Great Gods, set in a gorge near the old city of Paleopolis, once hosted the Kabeirian mysteries, a cult so secretive that revealing its rites was punishable by death, and the ruins today, including the largest circular building in ancient Greece, still carry that atmosphere.

The island's rivers cut through dense forest to form vathres, natural rock pools fed by waterfalls, and the ones along the Fonias River near Therma, a village named for its hot springs, rank among the most visited. Kremasto Nero, on the harder to reach southern coast, drops directly into the sea without touching the cliffs below, and hiking to it or to the summit of Mount Saos typically takes a full day with proper boots and a guide.

Chora, the island's capital, sits on the mountainside above the Sanctuary, its stone houses and castle ruins built in a style that owes as much to Thrace as to the Aegean. Pachia Ammos, the only real sandy beach, sits on the south coast, while Kipos, at the eastern end of the paved road, holds bluish grey pebbles and a starker, wind-scoured landscape. Several of the island's best coves are reachable only by boat from Kamariotissa or Therma.

Samothrace has no airport, so travelers reach it by ferry from Alexandroupoli, a crossing of just under two hours. It suits hikers, campers, and travelers drawn to ancient mystery cults and real wilderness over polished infrastructure, and locals describe the island as one that visitors either fall for immediately or turn back from, with little in between.
