Is Schinoussa Worth Visiting?

Schinousa holds Greece's record for the lowest average rainfall of any island, earning it the nickname the Island of the Sun, and that dry clarity carries through in unspoiled beaches and a stillness few Cycladic islands still offer.

Schinousa, part of the Small Cyclades south of Naxos, covers barely nine square kilometers and holds three settlements: Mersini, the port, Chora, also called Panagia, the main village, and Messaria, a smaller hamlet inland. Cars are rare here, so most people walk between village and beach along stone paths that cut through vineyards and terraced hillsides.

Close to a dozen unorganized beaches line the south coast, most reachable on foot within 15 to 45 minutes of Chora. Psili Ammos pairs turquoise water with golden dunes, Tsigouri sits closest to the village with the island's one beach bar, and Livadi's tamarisk trees give families shade that's hard to find elsewhere on the island. The whole island falls within the Natura 2000 network as a stopover point for migratory birds.

Schinousa takes its name from the mastic-like shrub, schinos, that grows across it, and the island holds its own claim to fame in fava, a local split pea dish celebrated each June with a two day festival built around food, music, and dancing. The Folklore Museum in Chora holds embroidery and tools donated by island families, and the Church of Panagia Akathi, home to a valued icon of the Virgin Mary, draws the island's largest religious gathering every August 15th.

There's no airport, so the only way in is by ferry, either direct from Piraeus, a trip of around seven hours, or through connections via Naxos, which has the nearest airport. Schinousa suits travelers who want real quiet, simple beach days, and walking over organized facilities or nightlife, and it pairs naturally with a slower stretch through the nearby Small Cyclades.
