Is Skiathos Worth Visiting?
Skiathos holds more than sixty beaches on an island small enough to circle by boat in a single day, and one of them, Koukounaries, has repeatedly ranked among the best beaches in Europe.
Skiathos sits in the Sporades, and its greenest, most heavily pine-covered stretches run down to the sand at Koukounaries, backed by the protected Strofilia wetland where herons, swans, and migratory birds nest alongside the beach crowds. Lalaria, reachable only by boat, pairs white pebbles with a natural rock arch and water that shifts through shades of turquoise, and a short trip further along the coast reaches sea caves carved into the same limestone cliffs.
Skiathos Town wraps around a harbor split by the Bourtzi peninsula, where the remains of a small Venetian castle, built by the Gyzi brothers in 1207, still stand among benches and sea views. The Papadiamantis Museum occupies the last home of the writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, one of Greece's most significant authors, and the Monastery of Evangelistria, a few kilometers outside town, sheltered fighters during the Greek War of Independence and is said to be where the first Greek flag was woven and blessed.
Skiathos and neighboring Skopelos served as the primary filming locations for Mamma Mia!, and sites like the cliffside Agios Ioannis Chapel and the steps by Agios Nikolaos Church draw fans, though the island's reputation for beaches and nightlife predates the film by decades. A network of buses runs the length of the south coast roughly every fifteen minutes in summer, and water taxis from the old harbor reach beaches not connected by road, making the island easy to explore without a rental car.
Skiathos has its own airport with direct flights from Athens and seasonal routes across Europe, and ferries connect it to Skopelos and Alonissos for anyone extending the trip further into the Sporades. It suits beach travelers, families, and film fans in equal measure, and its compact size means three to five days cover the island's beaches, town, and film locations without feeling rushed.
