Is Therasia Worth Visiting?

Therasia and Santorini were once a single island before a massive volcanic eruption around 1600 BC split them apart, and Therasia still carries that same caldera geology without a fraction of the crowds.

Therasia sits just off Santorini's western coast, and its capital, Manolas, sits directly on the caldera rim with whitewashed houses, windmills, and views across to Oia and Fira from a quieter vantage point. The abandoned village of Agrillia nearby, once the island's largest settlement, still holds cave houses and cellars carved into the rock, left to nature rather than converted into hotels.

The island's mines supplied material for the construction of the Suez Canal in 1866, a detail from Therasia's own industrial past. The Monastery of Kera, built in 1851 on Cape Tripiti, mixes archaeological and religious interest with a golden, five-domed Russian temple and a frescoed interior, sitting near a prehistoric settlement with preserved walls and stone tools. Fewer than 300 people live on Therasia year-round, spread across villages including Potamos, with its cave-style houses and blue-domed churches, and Agia Irini.

Korfos, the main beach, pairs black volcanic pebbles with views straight across the caldera, and Riva, near the main port, offers a similar mix of dark sand and clear water. A trail from Manolas climbs to the island's highest point for a 360-degree view of the Aegean, and Therasia also holds its own small vineyard, Mikra Thira, producing wine with the same volcanic mineral character found on Santorini.

Ferries run regularly from Athinios and from Ammoudi Bay below Oia, with the crossing taking as little as 10 to 30 minutes depending on the departure point. Therasia gives travelers the same volcanic landscape and caldera views without the density, and staying overnight lets the island's sunsets, villages, and quiet unfold on their own terms.
