Is Thessaloniki Worth Visiting?

Greece's second city sits in the shadow of Athens, and that's undeserved. Thessaloniki is worth the trip, especially for travelers who've already covered the islands and want to see a different side of the country.

Thessaloniki was founded around 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, and the centuries since left it with more visible layers than most Greek cities. Roman ruins sit a few streets from Byzantine churches, and Ottoman rule for close to five hundred years shaped the old upper town, Ano Poli, where narrow lanes and stretches of city wall climb the hill above the center. The city also had one of the largest Jewish populations in Greece before World War Two, and that history is still traceable in the old neighborhoods.

Daily life here runs on food. Thessaloniki is Greece's first UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and the local habit of eating bougatsa, a custard filled filo pastry, for breakfast is worth adopting for a morning. Kapani and Modiano markets sell spices, seafood, and street snacks a short walk from Aristotelous Square, and the Ladadika district near the port fills with bars and tavernas at night, fed by one of the largest university populations in the Balkans.

Getting there is straightforward. High speed trains connect Athens to Thessaloniki in under four hours, with departures running through the day, and direct flights land from several European cities. Day to day costs, including rooms and meals, tend to run noticeably lower here than in central Athens or the more visited islands in summer. The city itself has no real swimming beach, so day trips matter: Meteora's cliff top monasteries are about three hours away, and the beaches of Chalkidiki are roughly ninety minutes to two hours by car.

Thessaloniki suits travelers who want history, food, and city life over sand, particularly those returning to Greece for a second or third trip. First timers chasing classic beach postcards should treat it as an add on to island time rather than the main event.
