Is Zakynthos Expensive?
Zakynthos runs pricier than most of its Ionian neighbors, and Kefalonia in particular stands out as the notably cheaper option when the two islands get compared directly, though a well-planned Zakynthos trip still leaves real room for budget-conscious travelers.
Zakynthos carries higher hotel prices on average than most other Greek islands, and dining out here, especially at restaurants catering to the resort crowd, tends to cost more than a comparable meal on Kefalonia or elsewhere in the Ionian. That said, budget travelers still find real value across the island, since hostels, affordable tavernas, and free activities including the island's extensive hiking trails keep a trip manageable without paying resort-level prices for everything.
Public buses and scooter rentals give an economical way to get around, and relying on either rather than taxis or a rental car brings transport costs down noticeably over the course of a stay. All-inclusive resorts at the mass-market end sometimes undercut Kefalonia's comparable properties, so travelers set on that style of stay may actually find better value here than the island's overall reputation suggests.
A ferry crossing to Kefalonia, running a few times a week in summer from Zakynthos Town, gives an easy way to pair the two islands without flying, and the shorter luxury boat option costs a real premium over the standard route, though it drops passengers directly in the more central town.
Zakynthos suits travelers willing to spend a bit more for its beaches and boat trips while still finding genuine value in food, transport, and activities if they plan around the pricier resort areas, and Zakynthos's cost of living runs above the Greek average overall, particularly for dining and everyday services, though Kefalonia remains close enough to combine into the same trip for anyone wanting a more budget-friendly base nearby.
