Is Zakynthos Worth Visiting?

Zakynthos holds the single most photographed beach in Greece, a rusted 1980 shipwreck resting on white pebble between limestone cliffs that rise over 200 meters straight out of the sea.

Zakynthos sits south of Kefalonia in the Ionian, and Navagio, better known as Shipwreck Beach, occupies the island's northwest coast, only reachable by boat since a landing ban took effect in 2023 due to landslide risk from the cliffs above. Boats leave from Porto Vromi, the closest departure point at around 30 minutes each way, and arriving before 9:30am makes a real difference, since the cove fills with tour boats by mid-morning in peak season.

The island's south coast holds Laganas Bay, one of the most important nesting sites in the Mediterranean for loggerhead sea turtles, protected as part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, and boat trips here let visitors watch the turtles in open water under strict guidelines meant to protect the population. The Blue Caves at the island's northern tip hold sea caverns where sunlight refracts through the water into an intense electric blue, often paired with a Navagio boat trip on the same day.

Volimes, a small traditional village near the northwest coast, gives travelers a quieter base close to the shipwreck viewpoint, and Porto Limnionas, a dramatic cliff-lined inlet further south, draws swimmers and cliff jumpers to its clear water. Zakynthos Town, the capital, was largely rebuilt in a Venetian-influenced style after a 1953 earthquake destroyed much of the original city, and its main square and waterfront still reflect that reconstruction.

Zakynthos has its own airport with direct flights from Athens and seasonal routes from across Europe, and a rental car or scooter makes reaching the island's beaches and viewpoints far easier than relying on limited public transport. It suits beach travelers, wildlife watchers drawn to the turtles, and anyone chasing one of the most recognizable coastal images in the country, and the island holds enough variety to fill a week without repeating a stop.
