Agathonisi is known first for that contrast in naming, since ancient writers referred to the island as Tragia or Psetoussa long before its current name took hold. Settlement here traces back to the Carians, followed later by the Dorians and Ionians, and the waters around the island were once the site of a naval battle between Persian and Ionian forces, a detail tying this small island directly into the broader conflicts that shaped the ancient Aegean. The island also claims a link to philosophy, since Theogitos, a student of Aristotle, is said to have been born here.

Agathonisi is equally known today for its ecological importance, holding protected status under the European Natura 2000 network as a valuable shelter for rare and migratory bird species.
