What Is Agios Efstratios Known For?

Agios Efstratios carries one of the more difficult chapters in modern Greek history, having served as a site of internal political exile across several distinct periods of the 20th century.

Agios Efstratios is known first for that history, beginning in 1928 when the island started receiving political prisoners under successive Greek governments, a practice that intensified during the Metaxas dictatorship and continued intermittently through the Civil War years into the early 1960s. Notable figures held there included composer Mikis Theodorakis, poets Yiannis Ritsos and Kostas Varnalis, and actor Manos Katrakis, among roughly 6,000 people exiled to the island over the decades. The practice briefly resumed during the military junta of 1967 to 1974, when thousands more dissidents were sent to the island under harsh conditions. Today, the Museum of Democracy, housed in a restored historic schoolhouse, documents this history through prisoner testimonies and artifacts, recognized as Greece's first public institution dedicated specifically to the country's history of internal political exile.

The island is equally known for the earthquake that struck on February 20, 1968, a magnitude event that largely destroyed the historic village and resulted in loss of life. The government relocated the settlement afterward, rebuilding it with more uniform modern housing, and only a handful of structures from before the disaster survived, including the 1727 Basilica of Agios Vasilios. In 2018, the Greek Ministry of Culture announced funding to restore select ruins from the original pre-earthquake village.

Agios Efstratios is also known today for becoming Greece's first fully carbon-neutral territory, running entirely on renewable energy, a modern chapter that stands in real contrast to the island's more difficult 20th century history, connecting it by ferry to Lemnos.
