What Is Hydra Known For?

Hydra bans cars, scooters, and every other wheeled vehicle entirely, and that single rule has done more to shape the island's character than almost anything else.

Hydra is known first for that car-free status, one of only a handful of Greek islands to maintain it. Donkeys, mules, and boats handle everything from luggage to groceries, and the absence of traffic has helped preserve the island's stone architecture and its genuinely quiet daily rhythm, in ways that busier, more accessible islands nearby haven't managed to keep.

That quiet also drew an international artist colony that took root in the mid-20th century, most famously including Leonard Cohen, who first stepped off the ferry in 1960 as a young, still largely unknown writer. Cohen bought a house on the island and spent some of his most productive early years there, and it was on Hydra that he met Marianne Ihlen, the woman who would later inspire several of his best known songs. Fellow poet Kenneth Koch, visiting during that same period, later remarked that once you'd lived on Hydra, no other place ever quite felt the same again. Cohen's connection to the island has outlasted him, and fans have gathered on Hydra periodically since 2002 to mark his memory.

Beyond Cohen, Hydra has hosted painters, actors, and other artists for decades, including Sophia Loren and Melina Mercouri, both of whom filmed movies there, and the tradition continues today through organizations like the DESTE Foundation and a summer residency program run by the Athens School of Fine Arts. The island's stone mansions, originally built by wealthy shipping captains in the 18th and 19th centuries, still give Hydra Town its distinct architectural character, connecting the island by boat to Spetses and Poros across the Saronic Gulf.
