Ios carries a literary claim few islands can match, since tradition holds that Homer himself spent his final days here and was buried on its northern tip, though the actual evidence stays far murkier than the legend suggests.

Ios is known first for the Tomb of Homer, roughly 13 kilometers from Chora near Plakoto. According to island tradition, Homer's mother was born on Ios, and stories dating back centuries claim he returned there and died in old age. In the 17th century, an archaeologist discovered graves in the area, one bearing an inscription identifying the site as the poet's resting place, though no one can confirm when Homer actually lived, likely somewhere around the 8th century BC, let alone where he died.

The island is equally known today for its nightlife, a reputation that traces back to the 1970s, when hippies displaced from Matala on Crete found their way to Ios and helped establish it as a countercultural gathering point. That energy has carried through into the island's modern party scene, concentrated in Chora, where quiet daytime cafes transform into bars and clubs once the sun goes down.

Ios also holds real archaeological weight at Skarkos, a Bronze Age settlement just outside Chora that earned a European Union Cultural Heritage Prize in 2008 for the quality of its conservation, giving the island a documented history stretching back roughly 4,500 years, well before either Homer or the party scene came into the picture.
