What Is Kalymnos Known For?

Kalymnos built its economy on the sea for two thousand years, and in just the last two decades, an entirely different relationship with the island's rock has turned it into something else entirely.

Kalymnos is known first for sponge diving, an industry passed down through island families for generations, with divers historically descending to significant depths on a single breath before modern equipment existed. The trade shaped Pothia, the island's capital, whose neoclassical harbor houses reflect the wealth sponge fishing once generated, and locally harvested sponges still find their way into cosmetics, painting, leatherwork, and cleaning products sold around the world. The industry has faced real setbacks in recent decades, from sponge diseases to shifting global demand, but Kalymnos preserves that heritage through its Nautical Museum, family-run sponge shops, and an annual International Diving Festival.

The island is equally known today for rock climbing, and over roughly the past twenty years, Kalymnos has developed into one of the most significant climbing destinations in Europe, with more than 3,000 established routes across dozens of distinct climbing areas. Grande Grotta, above the villages of Massouri and Armeos, and Sikati Cave, a roofless sea cave accessible only by boat or a demanding hike, both rank among the island's best known spots, and an International Climbing Festival each October draws climbers from around the world.

Kalymnos also holds a genuinely unusual geographic feature in Vathy, a narrow inlet lined with citrus orchards that resembles a Scandinavian fjord more than typical Aegean coastline, and the nearby islet of Telendos, split from Kalymnos by an earthquake centuries ago, continues that same dramatic rock landscape just offshore, connecting easily by ferry to Kos and by short boat crossing to Telendos.
